I was thinking about who and what I am, and realized just how much of my identity was made up of my own warped thinking, but more than that, the lies that the enemy had been feeding me. He is the deceiver, he is much more intelligent and powerful than we are, and sadly, he knows our weaknesses. He knows what lies we will fall for.
That lead me to begin to pray a very simple prayer many times a day, whenever I thought about it. I began asking God, “Who do you say that I am?” God never actually gave me a concrete answer, but over time, He began to renew my thinking.
At the same, God had been telling me to slow down. I hadn’t. So one day, He told me to stop! I was to do nothing but the essentials, and all the time in between, I was to sit down and read His Word.
Are you seeing the correlation? Our identity is in Christ. And Christ is the Word. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Our identity is in Christ. And Christ is the Word
Full of truth. And the lies can’t stand in the presence of His truth. The more time I was spending in The Word, the more the lies were being dispelled, the more His truths were being cemented in my heart and mind. His truths became real to me. His Word says that I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13) and many more wonderful things.
But God is also very specific. He also made each of us uniquely. We all have a very specific purpose and calling, that is like no other. If you ask Him, He is faithful and will reveal to you who you are. He will reveal your very unique identity to you.
Something really wonderful happens when He does that. You experience His love for you as an individual. The loving way that He knit you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139), because He needs someone made specifically that way to fulfill a function only you can fulfill, to love someone the way only you can. He loves you for you.
And when you know who you are, and that you are loved for who you are, then you will never need to compare yourself to anyone else ever again. Then you can love everyone for who they are. Because there is no competition. There is no more striving. We are each uniquely loved. It’s much less about becoming better, and much more about removing the layers of the world. He has already put it all in you, it just needs to be activated by love. When I experience love, I am free to love. That’s how His glory and healing spreads.
Like I say, finding my identity in Christ was life changing.
